Obituary for Alyce Grant

Alyce Grant, nee Kieft, age 73, a longtime resident of Villa Park, died at home, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. Loving wife of William Grant; beloved mother of Brian (Shonah) and Melissa (Brook Enger) Grant; cherished grandmother to Ewan, Anwen, Esuyawkal, Sandia Grant and Fiona Enger; fond sister ot Thomas (Kathy) and the late William Kieft; aunt to William P. (Rachel) Kieft .

Alyce had a distinguished career in both nursing and nurse-midwifery. She graduated from West Suburban Hospital School of Nursing in 1966. Continuing in her education at the University of Illinois, Alyce received her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 1970 and completed her Master’s degree in 1978. She was professionally licensed as a Nurse-Midwife in 1976 by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. During her career, Alyce worked all over the Chicago area. She served in public health and private clients delivering babies both in homes and in hospitals.

Over her career, she delivered more than 2,000 babies and touched the lives of countless women. In addition to her medical career, Alyce was also passionate about education. She taught hundreds of students through the Chicago Board of Health, Northern Illinois University, Illinois Benedictine College, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation. Her impact on the professional world of nursing and nurse-midwifery reached far and wide.

Alyce and her family were long-time members of Christ Church of Oak Brook. Throughout the years, Alyce shared her gift and love for music as a member of the church’s choir. She and William helped to lead five mission trips to the Dominican Republic. Alyce was also active in other ministries at Christ Church including Stephen’s Ministries and the food pantry.

Love and devotion to family was a constant in Alyce’s life. Bringing the family together for regular holiday and birthday celebrations was of great importance to her. Vacations and trips were no exception. Once Brian and Melissa had begun families of their own, Alyce began to organize summer vacations in Wisconsin and Michigan incorporating her children and their growing families; this beloved tradition endured for over fourteen years. In her retirement, Alyce loved spending time with her grandchildren, both visiting them at their homes in Chicago and hosting them for weekend visits.
