Obituary for Rocco Christofano

Rocco D. Christofano, 96, beloved husband of the late Anne, to whom he was married for nearly 63 years. Dearest father of Martin (Constance) Christofano, Roxanne (Gregory) Pilat and Dr. Barbara Santucci. Loving Poppi of Laura (Charli), and Joseph Christofano, and Michael (Hayley) Pilat, Christopher (fiancée Maura), and Jennifer Pilat, and step-grandfather of Roxanne Haayer. Doting great-grandfather of Charles and Eleanor Pilat, step-great-grandfather of Taylor and Casey Haayer, and step-great-great-grandfather to Derek. Son of the late Mariano and the late Enrichetta (Santucci) Christofano. Beloved uncle of Ernestine (Dr. John) Bruno, and many other nieces and nephews, and godchildren. Son-in-law of the late Carmine and the late Anna Giannini.

Rocco was born and raised in Chicago, and attended the newly formed Illinois Institute of Technology, where he studied under famed architect Mies VanDeRohe. Fiercely patriotic, he was unable to serve during World War II, due to a hearing loss he suffered as a child. Instead he worked as plant manager for the Chicago-based DX Radio Crystal war plant, while completing his degree at Chicago Technical College, and working to grow the underground construction business his father had started more than twenty years earlier.

Rocco’s career spanned many years in the underground construction industry, as he continued to run M. Christofano and Son, completing water main and sewer construction projects through the city and suburbs. He also helped to develop ARM Construction Supply, which his wife, Anne, had founded. After retiring from his own business, he continued to work in the industry, for companies including D. Diorio and Son, and Carlo V. Santucci.

He was a member of the Local 150 Operating Engineer’s union for seventy years, and a senior member of the Santa Liberata mutual aid and religious society. He loved to spend time with his family and friends, and to read, travel and cook.
