Obituary for Mabel "Laurie" Paddleford

The only child of Victor and Alice Peterson Laurence, Mabel (“Laurie” to many) was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 27, 1913. The family moved to Alhambra, California, when she was an infant, then settled in Fort Dodge, Iowa, when she was five years old. She attended grade school and high school in Fort Dodge. In 1935 she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and Applied Art from Iowa State University. For the next four years she taught these subjects in Iowa and in Illinois.

In 1939 Laurie became a home lighting advisor for Commonwealth Edison, the electric power company in Chicago. It was there that she met Merton Paddleford, an electrical engineer also employed by the company. They were married March 8, 1941, in the chapel of First Methodist Church in Oak Park, Illinois. After Merton served in the U.S. Navy as Lt. Commander during World War II for four years in Wilmington, Delaware, the couple returned to Oak Park in 1946. There they purchased a house at 643 N. Grove, which would be their home for over fifty years. Their first child, Jane Carol, had been born in Wilmington on March 21, 1946. Their second child, Nancy Ann, was born in Oak Park on June 13, 1949.

A superb homemaker admired for her organizational skills, her cooking, love of entertaining, and her artistic sensibility, Laurie also worked as a substitute teacher in the Oak Park schools and as a library assistant at Hawthorne School. Her volunteer work included many activities at First Methodist Church and service for the Girl Scouts, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Tri-Delta Sorority, Infant Welfare and 19th Century Women’s Club. For nineteen years she was chair of the West Suburban Hospital Surgical Lounge volunteers, who provide special care for families with loved ones undergoing surgery. Throughout her adult life she pursued intensive Bible study through many classes that further enriched her Christian faith. Her vibrancy, good will and humor were admired by all who knew her.

Although most of her early years were spent in Iowa and almost all of her adult life in Illinois, Laurie traveled widely with her family and friends both in and outside the United States. In 2000 Laurie moved to Beacon Hill, a retirement community in Lombard, Illinois.

Preceded in death by Merton in 1994, and her grandson, David Merton Narvaez, in 2016, Laurie is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Earl Henrickson, and Nancy Paddleford and Leon Narvaez; grandchildren, Benjamin Narvaez (Martha Schultz) and Cristina Narvaez (Christian Conesa); and great-grandchildren, Margaux, Veronica, and Fabian Narvaez, and Lucía Conesa. As a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, she will be sorely missed. She brought brightness, joy and love to our lives. May she rest now in the glorious company of our Savior Jesus Christ.
