Obituary for Mark Grace

Mark Grace, age 51, of Schaumburg, formerly of Palatine. Dear son of the late William and Francene Cullotta Grace; beloved brother of Heather (William) Sykora; fond nephew of Richard (the late Deborah) Cullotta; proud uncle of Peter and David Sykora.

Mark William Grace was the first child born to Francene and William Grace. He was born on St. Joseph’s Day, March 19th, 1967 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He spent his first nine years living on the north side of Chicago in Rogers Park. When he was 9 years old, his family moved from an apartment in the city to a brand new house in Palatine, Illinois. The house in Palatine was filled with his family…his parents, his younger sister, his maternal grandparents and his maternal great-grandmother.

Mark attended William Fremd High School and graduated in 1985. He went onto college courses at Harper College and then to Loyola University Chicago where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing in 1991. During college, he fell in love with reading, writing and philosophy. He enjoyed engaging in deep philosophical and religious conversations.

After college, Mark held several positions in the business field. He worked for Canon Copiers and Snyovate to name a few, but he also had dreams of writing music and songs for many to hear. He played guitar and keyboard, and also sang in the men’s choir at St. Thomas of Villanova. Mark was a quiet, gentle man with a tremendous sense of humor and intellect. He was a faithful man who saw the hope in God’s saving grace and love. How Mark acted outwardly though, was very different than what was happening to him internally.

In 1985, Mark was diagnosed with a mental illness. He came home from school one day, his senior year, paranoid and crazed. He never returned. This is when he began his battle with paranoid schizophrenia. This illness haunted him day and night as his mind never rested for very long. There were some very good moments in his life, some wonderful memories of friends and family, and many, many laughs, but most could tell that he was always battling what he called his inner demons and negative thoughts.

In 2010, Mark began a new fight. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor which turned out to be brain cancer. He went through radiation and chemotherapy with tremendous bravery. With much support, love and prayers, Mark survived for as long as he possibly could…longer than anyone even the doctors expected.

Mark William Grace, son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, friend, musician, philosopher, writer, and fighter, is now resting peacefully. His battles are over. As Mark wrote in one of his personal essays entitled
“The Eternity of My Darkness”,
Thomas Dylan said in a poem, “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Why then go without a fight. To take one’s life is to submit, give up, and no longer rage against the dying of the light. Is it not the indomitable human spirit that will triumph when fighting the good fight? So, then rage, rage against the dying of the light. The eternity of my darkness will never be, I will always have hope and I will always rage against the dying of the light.
