Obituary for Rev. Robert "Bob" L. Gossett

Reverend Robert “Bob” L. Gossett of Lombard, IL and formerly of Wisconsin died peacefully at Elmhurst Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at the age of 81. Bob was the beloved husband of Jerilyn “Jeri” (nee Heup), loving father of Timothy (Kathryn) Gossett and Christina (Greg) Hull, proud grandfather of Evelina (Evie) and Dane Hull and Finn Gossett, fond brother in law of James (Ina) Heup, and caring uncle to several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eskell Gossett and Katherine Pfoff, his sister, Gladys Spangler, and his brother Ronald Gossett.

Bob was born on December 6, 1936 in Paxton, IL. He graduated from Drummer Township High School, Gibson City, Illinois in 1954. Feeling a call to professional ministry, he attended North Central College in Naperville, IL where he received BA degrees in Religion and Sociology. He married Jeri Heup on June 20, 1964. After graduating from Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville in 1966, he was ordained a minister in the Evangelical United Brethren Church which merged with the Methodist Church in 1968 to become the United Methodist Church (UMC).

Bob served as a pastor in several Wisconsin United Methodist churches: Walworth: Immanuel; New Berlin: Our Lord’s; Brillion: Faith; Boscobel/Mt. Zion; Clinton; and Port Washington: Grand Avenue. He retired in 2003, but continued to serve part-time in senior ministry and visitation at First UMC in Waukesha for an additional six years.

Bob was a passionate participant in the camping ministries of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church, counseling several age groups and co-directing a family camp with his wife, Jeri, for 18 years. Together they also helped to lead many Marriage Encounter weekends. He enjoyed watching Packer games, woodworking, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, and family card games. His children remember him as one who never missed an opportunity to see their performances or help with a paper route, and who taught faith by example. Bob’s ministry touched the lives of hundreds of church members, and he was known for his gentleness, conflict resolution skills, and his love for great sermon stories and illustrations. Even late in life when his mobility was limited, he was like a pastor to many of his nursing assistants and the staff at Lexington Health Care Center, where he spent his final years. His generosity continues even in death, with his choice to give his body to science.

A visitation is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, January 6 at First United Methodist Church in Lombard, Illinois, with a memorial service at noon and a luncheon to follow. Rev. Tim Friesema will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bob's life. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Wisconsin Conference United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministries, Lake Lucerne General Fund, W6460 County Road. YY, Neshkoro, WI 54960. Condolences can be sent to Knollcrest Funeral home, www.knollcrest.net.
